Fill the Rock

Win prizes for your conservation efforts!

Each small step toward water conservation adds up to big savings. If each Castle Rock resident used one less gallon of water a day, we could save 23 million gallons of water this year alone! Saving water is not only good for the environment, but also reduces the need to purchase water for future supplies.

During July, Castle Rock Water is providing our customers with tips, techniques and activities that are easy to do to save water. In return, we are randomly giving out weekly prizes to those who take this effort.

In addition to conserving water, you could win prizes valued at more than $800, like trampoline time at the MAC, a new water efficiency shower head, or an "I am a Rock" water bottle.

Register: Week 1Week 2; Week 3; Week 4 The Rock is 71% full!
For each of the four weeks, simply fill out the form and let us know how you are conserving. Each step completed will earn you another entry into the weekly drawing. Winners are randomly drawn but your chances to win depend on how many steps you take to conserve. The more steps you take, the more chances to win! Plus, all entries throughout the month are eligible for the grand prize, a smart irrigation controller valued at $200!

With each conservation activity you register, we will also be "filling" the Rock with water savings. Each conservation action will be given an arbitrary value of 1,000 gallons of annual water savings. Can we get enough residents to complete 1,577 activities to Fill the Rock? Help us try!

Week 4 Conservation Activities

Reduce, Reuse and Recycle

Catch the cold water from the shower to water plants; reduce the amount of water used to boil; use a single glass for drinking water throughout the day
Water when needed

Water every third day--at the most. Watering more often can cause shallow roots and unhealthy plants (and wastes water!)
Keep the grass
tall

Adjust your lawn mower to the height of 2 or more inches. Taller grass shades roots and holds soil moisture better than short grass.
Sing in the
shower

Plug into Pandora's Water Lover's station with water-themed songs that run for 5 minutes. When they stop singing, you stop showering!
Fill it up
full

Clothes and dish washers use less water than doing these chores by hand, but only when you run a full load.
Plant a tree or
two

Provide shade for your home, reduce the need for irrigation, reduce energy costs and increase water quality by planting a tree (or two.)
Condition your
soil

Having good soil for plants is one of the best methods to reduce the need for irrigation. Add 2-4 inches of compost to all landscape beds.

Learn from your
student

Let your child be your teacher. Download an activity book and ask him/her what it is all about. Find a link below to some fun puzzles and activities for students of all ages.
Give up the
bottle

Bottled water may be convenient, but the costs are high. Did you know that it takes two or more liters of water to create that one bottle of water?
Don't rinse it,
scrape it

Scrape food remnants into the trash instead of rinsing them down the drain. This also prevents nasty fats, oil and grease from clogging pipes and drains.
Turn the light
off

It can take up to 4 times the water you use daily to produce your home's energy! So turn off your lights and save water.
Make use of the
rain

Use a rain barrel to harvest rainwater. Two 55-gallon barrels are allowed per household. Also channel downspouts to landscape beds- away from the house.
